Shipping containers… big metal boxes taking a ride on massive vessels. We’ve said it 100 times and I’m saying it another 100 times, shipping containers can be used for anything and everything. Here are the top 5 container uses in the travel world.

1. AIRPORTS

Planes, helicopters and even birds, airports are one of the busiest locations in the world. With millions of people travelling every day and millions of containers being transported via a cargo plane, this requires a working force to keep things in place. I am currently working a project with a creative team based in Manchester, where we are designing a Marketing Suite for a very well-known airport. It consists of three 20ft new (once shipped) containers painted pure white, with bespoke windows and doors, built to building regulations, with an AstroTurf roof, bespoke lighting and much more. This will be an exciting project but we are still currently at the first phase and it already looks amazing, can’t wait to see the final product.

2. MOTORWAY SERVICE STATIONS

Did you know the longest motorway in the UK is the M6 which stretches out 226 miles long? After all that driving we all need a rest, even though you are meant to take a break every 4 hours of driving. So, stop at the nearest service station and pop over to the container shops, selling you refreshments and food, similar to our pop up shop for the commonwealth games (link to case study). If you are feeling tired and need a comfortable bed to lie on, stop at a hotel constructed from shipping containers like the
Travelodge in Uxbridge, West London, you will never notice you are sleeping in a shipping container.

3. TRAIN STATIONS

Even though shipping containers are used to transport cargo on freight trains from one location to another, it’s a lot quicker than travelling on the road. There is no better way of using these boxes as your local train station. Yes, you read it correctly;
architects in Holland have already designed and transformed shipping containers into a contemporary multi-functional station. We all know that sometimes it’s a drag whilst waiting for your train, but this transformation will make it less of a drag by adding an interest and functionality to keep the travellers occupied. Consisting of one 40ft and three 20fts, it looks amazing and I think I might just miss my train by concentrating on the details put into such project.

4. CAR GARAGES

We all love our cars and take care of them as much as we can, some tend to call it their second wife because of the amount of time they spend with it. Millions of people travel on the road day in, day out and all cars will 100% have a fault one day, need regular maintenance or get a swanky new look. Reprocessed shipping containers have also found themselves as ingenuous garages and workshops in many different parts of the world. For example, the
Hoonigan Division based in Park City, Utah, consists of 17 quality used shipping containers to construct a garage, office and workshop, where it holds the beasts of the Gymkhana Racing Team who burn a lot of rubber.

5. BICYCLE STORAGE

Did you know that cycling up to 1 hour can burn 800 calories? Bicycles produce no meaningful pollution when in operation, unless you want to call your sweat pollution, which by all means you can. No fuel cost, no road tax and you can have many different styles. Bicycles are used daily for quick transport, exercise and for fun but after all of those hours of chain spinning, you will pull your brake, burn a little rubber and stop. In short, the bike will need to be stored away. Crime is unfortunately part of modern day life and some bikes are very valuable. However, at Lion Containers we believe the best way to combat crime is often the simplest. Using shipping containers as a form of bicycle storage is a fantastic way to keep it secure and safe, similar to the
Bike and Roll in New York where shipping containers have been converted and placed around the city for secure bike storage.

So there we have it, my top 5 container uses in the travel world, it’s just amazing what we can do with a big empty box. It can create garages, offices, homes and much more. I hope this has given you enough ideas for a conversion project of your own, if so then don’t hesitate to contact our friendly sales department on 0333 600 6260 to discuss more.
