Shipping containers are made out of steel and are susceptible to diverse changes in temperature, from extremely hot to bitterly cold. Therefore, they will inevitably suffer from condensation to a certain degree. Here, we discuss the degree to which condensation can be a problem in shipping containers, together with methods of preventing condensation in shipping containers.
However, some stored items will encourage condensation, such as white goods and metals. It is also impossible at times, depending on how, when and where the container is used, to keep the doors closed during poor weather. In these circumstance, you simply can’t stop condensation forming, though you can stop condensation from damaging stored items. An economical way of doing this is to use moisture traps. A moisture catcher is a small box that contains condensation crystals that absorbs the moisture in the air.
In a 20ft shipping container, condensation control ‘moisture traps’ last, in most cases, between 6 and 8 weeks. At this point, you should just replace the crystals, at a cost of about £5. Such damp removal products are perfect for both domestic and self-storage containerised sites. We recommend customers purchase these moisture absorber traps to protect their goods when stored or housed in a shipping container.
If your shipping container requires condensation control on a larger scale, Grafo-Therm should be considered. This is a thin layer of a foam-like substance, sprayed onto the roof of the container. Again, Grafo-Therm will not prevent condensation completely, but it does prevent the water from dripping so that your goods never suffer from water damage.
To reiterate, condensation can be stopped with common sense measures. However, some stored items do encourage condensation. In these cases, both ‘moisture traps‘ and Grafo-Therm are sustainable, sensible measures.
